History 1821-1945

The firm was founded in 1821, in the city of Zara (Zadar in Croatian), by Girolamo Luxardo, who had moved there in 1817 as the consular representative of the Kingdom of Sardinia to the Kingdom of Dalmatia (which was under the Austrian Empire). Zadar was the capital of the Kingdom, after having been for several centuries under the rule of Republic of Venice as the capital of the Stato da Mar.

The first and the most successful product was Liquore Maraschino, an old traditional liqueur from Dalmatia. Later the Sangue Morlacco followed.

A modern and big factory, which building is still present in Zadar, was built in 1913; a few years after, Zadar was ceded to the Kingdom of Italy, after the end of World War I.

The distillery was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombings during the Second World War; in 1944, at the end of German occupation, the city was seized by Josip Broz Tito's troops, then ceded to Yugoslavia at the end of the war. Almost all the Italian citizens, and among them most of the Luxardo family were forced to flee (exodus from Istria and Dalmatia).[1]
